Mothers’ Guild

Mothers GuildSt. Mary’s Mothers’ Guild has played an active part in St. Mary’s School for over sixty years by supporting the best education possible for the students at St. Mary’s School.

The Mothers’ Guild was founded in 1942 by Father Loughlin, then Pastor of St. Mary’s Parish.  All parents of children attending St. Mary’s School are members of the Mothers’ Guild.  By being available to the school, the organization has become a vital part of each school day.

The Guild meets monthly to communicate school news, organize activities and events, and share a sense of community.

Participation could include heading committees, becoming officers, tutoring, library duty, lunch time supervision, room parents, chaperoning field trips, or just helping out.

Through various fund raising activities, the Mothers’ Guild has been able to provide many tools for education and activities that greatly enrich and enhance the education of the children of St. Mary’s School.

Some highlights of the important contributions made by the Mothers’ Guild include:

  • Creation of the school library in the 60s, which currently houses over 11,000 volumes.  Continued funding has expanded the collection and allowed the addition of a teachers’ lounge.
  • Funding equipment and furniture in the science labs, making them completely functional classrooms with more than adequate equipment for each child.
  • Sponsors of the School Science Fair for over thirty years, which includes student awards.  Encouraging opportunities for scientific investigation and research.
  • The Mothers’ Guild has brought the DARE Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) into the school.  In fact, St. Mary’s was the first Catholic School in Dutchess County to have a DARE Program.
  • The Mothers’ Guild also provides the bulk of the funds for educational field trips.  These trips are curriculum mandated and are funded entirely by the Mothers’ Guild and parents.
Of course, there are numerous, yet no less important contributions, made every day by the Mothers’ Guild: lunch supervision on the playground, library volunteers, classroom assistance, graduation awards, Christmas parties, Field Days and uniform exchange.
